New Patient Information for Your First Flint Dermatology Visit
Everything you need to feel prepared and at ease before your first appointment at Dermatology and Cosmetic Center.
What to expect as a new patient
Welcome to Dermatology and Cosmetic Center. Whether you are visiting us from Flint, Grand Blanc, Flushing, Swartz Creek, or elsewhere in Genesee County, our goal is to make your first visit calm, thorough, and reassuring. Knowing what to expect ahead of time can help you feel confident walking through our doors.
What happens at a first dermatology visit?
Your first appointment is a conversation as much as an examination. Your provider will ask about your skin concerns, your medical history, and any symptoms you have noticed. Depending on your reason for the visit, this may include a focused look at a specific area or a full skin examination. Together you will discuss findings and, if needed, a plan for treatment or follow up.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Having a few items ready helps your visit go smoothly and ensures nothing important is missed:
- A valid photo ID
- Your current insurance card
- A list of your current medications, vitamins, and supplements
- A referral from your primary care provider, if your insurance plan requires one
- Notes about the skin concerns you would like to discuss, including how long you have had them
- Names of any skin products, creams, or treatments you are currently using
How should I prepare for my skin exam?
A little preparation helps your provider see your skin clearly and give you the most accurate assessment:
- If you are coming in for a facial skin concern, arrive with a clean face and skip makeup so the area can be examined fully.
- Remove nail polish if you have concerns about your nails, since color can hide important details.
- Wear your hair down or bring it loose if you have scalp or hairline concerns.
- Make a short list of your questions and concerns in order of what matters most to you.
- Avoid applying heavy lotions or self tanner to areas you want examined.
Should I arrive early and complete forms in advance?
We recommend arriving about fifteen minutes early so you have time to check in without feeling rushed. Many new patient forms can be completed ahead of time through our patient portal, which saves time in the waiting room. Completing your paperwork in advance also gives your provider a fuller picture of your health before you sit down together.
What actually happens during a skin exam?
During a skin examination, your provider looks carefully at the areas of concern and, when appropriate, other areas of the skin to check for anything that needs attention. The exam is quick and comfortable, and you are always in control. If your provider notices a spot that should be looked at more closely, they may recommend a simple procedure such as a biopsy and will explain each step before anything is done.
What if I feel nervous about my visit?
It is completely normal to feel a little unsure before a first dermatology visit. Our team is here to listen, answer your questions, and move at a pace that feels right for you. There is no concern too small to bring up, and no question you should hesitate to ask. Caring for your skin is a partnership, and we are glad you have chosen us.
